City of Chania

The city of Chania is located on the north-east part of the Prefecture of Chania. It is the capital of the prefecture and its administrative, economic, commercial and transportation center.

Chania is a city of approximately 100 000 inhabitants, with a long history that dates from ancient times. It has been a meeting point for many civilizations (Minoan, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish) that have left their marks, which the visitor can meet everywhere. The city’s old part is well preserved and charming and the modern part is alive and organized.

Chania is considered one of the most beautiful cities of Greece and the most picturesque city of Crete. The city of Chania is also characterized by a rich cultural life. Exhibitions, festivals, theatrical and musical performances are organised all year round.

The city has an international airport and the port of Souda, the largest natural port of the Mediterranean sea.

The Municipal Market is one of the most central spots in the city and is housed in a 1913 building. A short distance from the centre there is the Municipal Garden which includes a small zoo.

The city offers many opportunities for recreation and entertainment in both summer and winter time. Summer time is best for relaxation since the city is by the sea and is also the place where many excursions are organised in the rich natural environment of the Perfecture of Chania (beaches, mountainous paths, water springs, gorges, traditional villages).
